Who we are
GUILTY or NOT? CDN version is a free daily game built on real Canadian criminal cases. It is operated by Bornfreund Legal Services, PC (“we”, “us”), 920 Yonge Street, Suite 602, Toronto, Ontario, and is hosted on the Every Defence LLP website. This notice covers the game only. The rest of everydefence.ca is covered by the firm’s Privacy Policy.
What the game collects
- The judge name you choose. It appears on the public leaderboard with your score, streak, number of cases played and rank. Pick any name; it does not need to identify you, and it should not be anyone else’s real name.
- Your verdicts and scores. When you submit a verdict, we record your judge name, the date, the case, your verdict, whether it matched the court’s decision, and the points awarded.
- Anonymous play records. Each verdict is also recorded against a random session identifier created by your browser, so we can count how many people played each case. Community vote tallies are stored as totals only.
- Usage events. To understand how the game is used and to fix problems, the game records events such as opening a screen or finishing a case, with the page address, the random session identifier, and basic details of the event. These events are not linked to your judge name.
- Technical logs. Our hosting and database providers may record standard request information, such as IP address, browser type and time of request, for security and operations.
The game does not ask for your real name, email address, phone number or payment details.
What stays on your device
The game keeps your progress, streak, score, judge name, recently played cases and preferences (such as sound on or off) in your browser’s local storage, along with the random session identifier. This stays on your device. It is not a cookie and is not shared with other websites. You can erase it at any time by clearing this site’s data in your browser settings; you will lose your streak and progress.
The game does not use cookies, advertising, or third-party analytics or tracking scripts, and we do not sell personal information.
Why we use it
To run the game: serve the daily case, score your verdicts, show the leaderboard and community tallies, understand which cases and features are used, and keep the service secure. We do not use game data to market legal services to you.
Where it is stored
The game’s database and server functions are provided by Supabase, on servers in Ohio, United States. The game’s web pages are served by our web host, DreamHost, in the United States. Information stored in the United States is subject to the laws of that country and may be accessible to its courts and authorities.
How long we keep it
Leaderboard, score and play records are kept while the game is running. Usage events are kept for statistics. You can ask us to delete the records tied to your judge name at any time, and we will do so unless the law requires us to keep them.
Your choices and rights
You can play without sharing anything that identifies you. You may ask to access, correct or delete personal information we hold about you, or withdraw your consent to its use. Write to us at the address below; tell us the judge name you used and roughly when you played. We will respond within 30 days. If you are not satisfied with our response, you may contact the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada at priv.gc.ca.
Age
The game is intended for adults 18 and over, as set out in the Terms of Use. It is not directed at children and we do not knowingly collect information from them.
Changes
If we change what the game collects or how it is used, we will update this notice and the date at the top.
